Axel Poulsen

Rikard Axel Poulsen (born December 1, 1887 in Copenhagen ; † August 22, 1972 there ) was a Danish sculptor.

Life

The son of the carpenter Hans Poulsen and Maria Malmberg studied at the Royal Art Academy in Copenhagen from 1908 to 1911. After completing his studies, he spent several years in Rome and Florence , from where he undertook study trips to Germany , France and Greece, among others . In Italy he met Elisabeth Bergstrand . He married the artist and later writer on November 12, 1917. The couple had two sons: Ivar (1918) and Hans (1920). From 1931 Poulsen was a council member of the Academy of Arts.

Works of art by Poulsen have been exhibited in the USA and Norway, among others. Outstanding works are the Genforenings monument made of bronze in Fælledparken, Copenhagen, made between 1926 and 1930 ; a granite relief made between 1928 and 1934 in memory of Danish soldiers who died in the First World War near Marselisborg Castle , Aarhus ; a Freedom Monument in Gentofte Town Hall (1954); and a royal monument in Viborg Cathedral (1965). Incidentally, Poulsen mainly designed altars and church statues.

After his death he was buried in Ordrup Kirkegård.

Awards

In 1934 he was made a knight of the Order of Dannebrog . In 1947 and 1962 he was awarded the higher degrees of Dannebrogordenens Hæderstegn and Kommandør af Dannebrog . The Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen honored him for his work in 1912 and 1913 with two gold medals, in 1914 with the Eckersberg medal and in 1963 with the Thorvaldsen medal.
