Axim is a city in the Nzema East District in the Western Region of Ghana . The city has about 12,000 inhabitants and is located around 65 km west of Takoradi .

history

The second oldest slave castle in Ghana is located in Axim : Fort St. Antony (actually Fort Sáo Antonio) from 1515 has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979 . In 1642 the Treaty of Axim was signed here between the local leaders and the Netherlands .

climate

In Axim, rain of over 2000 mm per year falls regularly, which makes the city one of the rainiest places in the whole country.

Personalities

A well-known personality from Axim (or a nearby village) is Anton Wilhelm Amo (1703–1756), the first black African who received a philosophical training in Europe and published philosophical works. The first President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, comes from near Axim and lived there for a while, taught at a Catholic school and headed an intellectual group.
