Azza Abdel Aziz Soliman ( Arabic عزة سليمان, DMG ʿAzza Sulaimān ; * 1968 ) is an Egyptian lawyer , human rights defender and feminist .

Life

Azza studied law with a focus on how fatwas affect violence against women within Egyptian culture. She is co-founder and chair of the Center for Egyptian Women's Legal Assistance (CEWLA), the legal aid center for Egyptian women, and built the Religious Reform & Renewal Forum (RRRF), a forum that deals with women in Islam and the dynamics associated with it .

The lawyer, who has been politically active since her studies, has been fighting corruption and injustice for more than two decades and fights for the economic, social and political inclusion of women. She led and accompanied many campaigns for gender equality . As part of her work at CEWLA, she represents victims of domestic violence in court and has been able to contribute to various legal reforms and amendments, including for the rights of illegitimate children, developments in divorce law and custody. Throughout her life, the human rights defender placed a strong focus in her work on imparting legal awareness through specific training courses, especially for women and minority groups, and on creating social awareness of women's rights.

Azza Soliman was wrongly accused in 2015 of, among other things, an unauthorized demonstration. In the course of state investigations against NGOs , she was also accused of accepting foreign donations. As a result, a travel ban was imposed on her in November 2016 and her private accounts and those of her law firm were blocked. She was arrested on December 7, 2016, and released on bail the next day .

Honors and prizes

Azza Soliman was nominated for the Allard Prize in 2017 for her commitment to women's rights and her fight against corruption and was among the three finalists.

In 2018 she won the Martine Anstett Prize , which was awarded during the FIFDH (International Film Festival on Human Rights in Geneva), in recognition of her fight against violence against women.
