The Bäckerstraße in Kempten (Allgäu) is a medieval street in the former imperial city. The streetscape is characterized by houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, some with medieval cores. Bäckerstraße is part of the Kempten listed ensemble of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation .
Bäckerstraße is slightly curved towards St.-Mang-Platz and is probably one of the oldest settlement centers in the imperial city. With a bend, Bäckerstraße joins Burgstraße. This structurally monotonous part also includes the Ankergässele, which with its side gate of the Ankertörle of the city fortification towards Bäckerstraße gives off old-town accents.
In 1910 Bäckerstrasse was flooded by the nearby Iller, which was overflowing .
An Alemannic village instead of Bäckerstraße, as it can be read in historical literature, cannot be proven.
Development
Most of the houses have two or three stories and their eaves face the street.
Some of the southern house facades face the street. The northern block of houses, on the other hand, is usually designed flush in an arch. The listed houses on the street lost their original appearance through shop fittings and facade renovations of the 20th century.
