The bear fountain is a fountain that depicts Berlin's heraldic animal , a brown bear , as a family. The fountain is located in the Berlin district of Mitte at Werder market before Friedrichswerder Church .

history

The fountain in 1934.
In the background the building academy . The young tree seems to have survived the chaos of war .

In the 1920s, Hugo Lederer made this decorative fountain from red lava tuff stone , which was set up on the Werderscher market in 1928. The stone work of art was destroyed by the fighting at the end of the Second World War in Berlin city center . On the occasion of the reconstruction of the inner city by the Berlin magistrate , the sculptor Walter Sutkowski was commissioned to recreate the fountain based on historical models. The complete copy of the fountain system was installed in its old place in 1958 and put into operation. A memorial plaque on the base of the fountain provides information about the history.

description

All parts of the fountain have been carved out of red rock in a color matching the neighboring building academy . The substructure consists of an octagonal, 60 centimeter high platform with a diameter of 3.50 meters. On every second long side there is a playing pair of bear children. The four couples are guarded by the mother bear, who sits on another 70 centimeter high, also octagonal pedestal. Between the bear cubs there is a recess from which small fountains gush. The figures of the young bears are 60 centimeters high, the she-bear about 1.25 meters (without plinth ). The side walls of the platforms are fluted .
