The Bärenstein is a memorial stone in the Ilm district ( Thuringia ), which lies between the Lütschetalsperre and Dörrberg , a district of Geratal , on the Waldsberg and is intended to commemorate the shooting of the last bear (see brown bear ) in Thuringia.

It stands at the point where the district forester Hans Balthasar Harras is said to have hunted down the last bear of the Thuringian Forest on August 14, 1671 . The memorial stone is located near the Waldsberg head at an altitude of 700 m.

There is a memorial plaque at a refuge, the so-called Bärenstein hut. This plaque reminds of the shooting, although only one of the last bears is mentioned here.
