The Lütsche dam (or Lütschetalsperre ) is located on the northern slope of the Thuringian Forest in the Frankenhain area ( Ilm district , Thuringia ), about 20 kilometers southwest of Arnstadt and 35 kilometers southwest of Erfurt . It is the second largest body of water in the Ilm district.

description

The Lütschetalsperre was built between 1935 and 1938 by the Deutsche Reichsbahn for around 4 million Reichsmarks. This enabled the stations of Arnstadt , Neudietendorf and Erfurt to be supplied with soft water , which prevented the formation of scale in the steam locomotives. Commissioning was on July 12, 1938. The necessary land was made available by the State of Thuringia ; After completion, the dam became state property and is operated by the Thuringian long-distance water supply . The dam is mainly used for recreation and, to a lesser extent, for generating electrical energy from hydropower .

According to the operating company, the dam should ensure that the Wild Gera flows evenly for the mill to operate after its construction. In addition, there was the water supply for the extinguishing cisterns in Erfurt (in the area of today's InterCityHotel at the main train station and the former Braugold brewery). The annual water withdrawal was 1.4 million m³. Today the dam supplies the Deutsche Bahn with the Erfurt train station, the Erfurt data center, the Neudietendorf superstructure and the Erfurt extinguishing water cisterns with process water. In addition, industrial water is supplied to the Bischleben heating system and the Erfurt municipal utility. Today's annual water withdrawal is 0.5 million m³.

Waters

Location map

The dammed body of water is called Lütsche . This river is made up of two smaller brooks ( Langer Grund and Oberster Wiesengrund ), both of which arise near the winter sports town of Oberhof (in the two valleys north and south of the Lärchenkopf ).

Barrier structure

The shut-off is an arcuate gravity dam of concrete , which consists of 14 fields. It was founded on a quartz porphyry underground. The dam was renovated from 1994 to 1996. The top of the wall was renewed once before in the 1980s.

The small hydropower plant has an output of 14 kW. The flood relief is a free overflow with two openings in the middle of the wall.

At the end of October 2015, the dam was completely emptied for maintenance work. The restocking took place from mid-December. A general renovation of the dam is planned in around five years.

tourism

There is a campsite and several smaller restaurants at the Lütschetalsperre. It is a popular destination for day tourists from the area, as several bathing areas with sunbathing lawns and sports facilities are open in summer. Due to its location in the Thuringian Forest, the Lütschetalsperre is quite cool in summer. The water temperature is only around 15 to 20 degrees Celsius. The reservoir is used for diving training. In December 2002, the water level was temporarily lowered during maintenance work, and a "skeleton" came to light - it was a plastic replica that was hidden on the bottom by divers as a surprise.

On December 8, 2004, the former restaurant Zum Lütsche-Stausee burned down completely.

The skeleton itself could not be recovered without aids. After the recovery it turned out to be a plastic replica. The skeleton is used by the Eisenach diving school Detlef Korsten located there. It is attached to a "treasure chest" at a depth of twelve meters. Another skeleton was also attached to the depths for the fun of the divers. "
