Bågspännaren

Bågspännaren is a memorial to the Engelbrekt uprising between 1434 and 1436.

It is located on the northwest side of Kornhamnstorget in Stockholm's old town Gamla stan in Sweden .

The memorial was created by sculptor Christian Eriksson and erected in its current location in 1916. It consists of a high, tapering base on which a bronze sculpture is located. The sculpture depicts a young man in a hunched position who is about to cock his crossbow . Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson , the leader of the uprising against the Danish king, and his fighters are only shown as a relief on the base.

The memorial was originally planned to be erected in Falun . But those responsible there found the monument too socialist . A representation of Engelbrekt Engelbrektssons was expected and saw in the work the representation of an idea. An association for the beautification of Stockholm then acquired the monument and donated it to the city.

The author Ivar Lo-Johansson mentions the memorial in his autobiographical novel Asfalt and notes that this is the first time it is portrayed to an ordinary person who draws his bow to protect his country against the enemy.
