Bundle sheath

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bundle sheaths are tissue structures in plants that cover the vascular bundles in leaves. They consist of parenchymal cells that lie against one another without intercellular spaces , i.e. without gas-filled cavities.

The function of the bundle sheath is to mediate the transport of substances between the mesophyll and vascular bundles. In plants with C 4 photosynthesis, there are chloroplasts in the bundle sheath cells that perform part of this special type of photosynthesis .
