The building was erected in the mid-19th century in the late classicist style as a hall, restaurant and clubhouse for the bourgeois casino society. In 1878, this single-storey part of the building was extended by a two-storey front building by the Cottbus master builder Schulz, based on a design by the Berlin architect Eduard Titz (1819–1890). The facade design of the extension was adapted to the existing component. There were several conversions, so in 1891, 1912, 1919, 1921 and 1929. From 1915 to 1919 the building served as reserve hospital II.

Since the building no longer met modern structural requirements, an energetic renovation of the facade, roof and windows took place in 2010/2011. The installation of fire protection technology, noise protection technology and ventilation technology as well as improvements in accessibility through a wheelchair ramp at the Feigestrasse entrance were carried out in the first construction phase. In the second construction phase, an elevator for barrier-free access to the upper floor was installed and the attached office wing was renovated. This made further uses such as the improvement of media educational offers possible. Examples of this are concerts and events, exhibitions, competitions by artists, workshops, scene parties, film screenings as well as theater and more. The building, which is striking in terms of urban planning, is now the “Glad House” youth leisure center and has been a domicile for youth work and culture for around 60 years.

architecture

The main view of the former citizens' casino from 1878 is characterized by a three-axis central projection with a doorway (originally the main entrance, flanked by pilasters and with gable roofing) and by inclined corner projections with corner blocks . The ground floor windows were expanded into entrances in 1921. Apart from the base, the facade is covered with plaster tape. On the ground floor there are straight-cut windows under the cornice and gable roofing, on the upper floor there are two- and triple-coupled arched windows set in simple frames. The transition to the roof is formed by a surrounding eaves cornice on consoles . The now closed longitudinal walls of the adjoining hall to the east are sparsely structured with pilasters. Here, too, the corners are square. Fragments of the original stucco decorations have been preserved in the approximately 210 square meter and 8.5 meter high ballroom. The large vaulted beer cellar is only part of the cellar system from 1860.

The urban development, architecturally appealing corner development has a defining effect on the street. The building has a representative appearance in the form of the Schinkel succession and has been preserved in all essential parts.
