Vorsfelde Citizens' School

The Vorsfelde Citizens' School in the Wolfsburg district of Vorsfelde in Lower Saxony is a school building built in 1870. Initially it served as a community school , from which the old town school Vorsfelde developed in the second half of the 20th century .

description

Design drawing around 1870

The two-storey brick building is 26 meters long and 14 meters wide. It has a nine-axis symmetrical facade with a small, central dwarf house . The mid-house and the arched windows show stylistic elements of historicism . When it was built, there were four classrooms on the ground floor and two smaller classrooms, a conference room and an apartment for the teacher on the upper floor. The sanitary facilities were housed in an adjoining building, which was a single-storey half-timbered building that no longer exists. In addition, there was a two-storey school building 24 meters long and 10 meters wide, erected in 1905, in which only the two lower classrooms were used. When the new school was built in 1951, it was demolished.

history

Predecessor construction and construction

First school on Amtsstrasse until 1870, demolished in 1987

The previous building in the Amtsstrasse had become dilapidated at the end of the 18th century and threatened to collapse. It was rebuilt in 1805 and offered a classroom for the pupils of the village with 900 inhabitants, in which schooling was not yet compulsory. Due to the increasing number of residents, additional classrooms were set up in the building. Since the class size was still very high with up to 40 children, in 1848 it was found necessary to build a community school. In 1866, the Vorsfeld municipal council decided to build a new school building. Construction began in 1868 and was completed in 1870. The construction costs amounted to 11,880 Reichstaler . When choosing a location, a plot of land on Wolfsburger Strasse was chosen that was outside the old settlement core. Against this, the citizens raised objections in vain, who wanted the school to be in a central location in the village. With the building of the school, the expansion of the centuries-old boundary of the old settlement core was initiated. When the school was inaugurated on November 20, 1870, it had 270 students. In 1900 there were 350 children in six classes. Six teachers taught nearly 60 children per class.

20th century

After the First World War and when the Weimar Constitution came into force, the church lost its influence over the school. Even religious instruction was no longer under the control of the superintendent of the Provoste Vorsfelde . The previous school board was replaced in 1919 by a democratically elected body, which included the mayor, a master baker, an innkeeper and the pastor.

In 1923 an eight-class middle school train with four classes was set up. At the time, the community school had seven classes. After the seizure of power , the school was renamed elementary school in 1933. The school children and teachers wore brown uniforms and new flags with new emblems were purchased. Members of the Hitler Youth and the Association of German Girls were allowed to use the classrooms free of charge. From 1935 onwards there was no school on Saturdays, but the schoolchildren had to take part in events organized by the Hitler Youth and the Association of German Girls. The greatest achievement since the school was built in 1934 was the installation of a central heating system. In 1939 the school had 230 elementary school students and 100 middle school students.

During the Second World War, the number of pupils increased, as from 1943 those who had run out of the cities moved to Vorsfelde. In March 1945, towards the end of the war, the German military was housed in the school. When American troops reached Vorsfelde on April 11, 1945, US soldiers were billeted at the school. Thereafter, displaced persons from Poland who had been deported to Germany during the war lived in the building. In early 1946, school lessons began again with five teachers in four classrooms. The school had around 300 elementary school students and around 110 middle school students at the time. At the beginning of 1950 the number of students increased enormously. 740 students were taught by 16 teachers in 10 classrooms, so that the average class size was 67 students. Therefore, school lessons were given in three shifts.

Development to the old town school Vorsfelde

Left the old town school, right the citizen school

At the beginning of the 1950s, the opinion prevailed that only a new school building could remedy the shortage of space. In the first construction phase, new classrooms were built in 1951. In the second construction phase, the school building erected in 1905 was torn down and built over. This resulted in eight more classrooms, a school auditorium in the attic and two work rooms in the basement. In the third construction phase, a physics room was created and in the fourth construction phase, the 25 × 13 meter gym. In 1955 the construction work was completed. The school had 17 classrooms. The construction costs amounted to 450,000 DM.

In 1955 the elementary and middle schools were spatially separated. The middle school was located in the school building of the former citizen school, built in 1870, while the elementary school was housed in the new building. In the 1960s, the resulting school complex was officially named Old Town School. In addition, two school pavilions with four classrooms were set up behind the school building from 1955.

Names and functions

Over time, the school had different names and functions. In the beginning it was the citizen school, from 1900 the elementary school , from 1928 the citizen school and middle school and from 1946 the elementary school and middle school. At the beginning of the 1960s, a larger new school building with a gym was built behind the school building. The school complex with the old school building from 1870 and the new building operated under the name Old Town School. From 1977 the school area was the elementary school Altstadt Vorsfelde. It has been an open all-day school since 2013 . In 2015 the school merged with the Moorkämpe elementary school to form the Drömling Vorsfelde elementary school and became the Altstadt location.

Today there is a city youth center in the building of the town school from 1870 .
