The brushing of wooden surfaces is used to work out the existing structure of the annual rings . The soft early wood is removed with a wire brush while the harder late wood is retained and a relief-like effect is achieved. This surface treatment is mainly used for soft woods such as fir , pine or spruce . If veneers are to be brushed, they should have a minimum thickness of 2.5 mm.

Brushing can be done by hand or with a machine-driven brush . The process is repeated until the desired structure is achieved.

The finished surface can then be flamed , stained , bleached , varnished , oiled or waxed .
