Bạc Liêu is a city in the Bạc Liêu Province in Vietnam . It is part of the Mekong Delta in South Vietnam. In the 2009 census, the population of the city center was 109,529 (1999 census: 109,529). The district-free city of Bạc Liêu had a population of 147,855 in 2009. The city forms the capital of the province of Bạc Liêu. The city has had town charter since 2010 and has the status of a 3rd class provincial town.
The former name of the city is Vĩnh Lợi .
history
The name Bạc Liêu is based on the Chinese pronunciation of a Khmer name (Pol Leav ពល ពល in Khmer). In the 1950s the area was a center of the Hòa Hảo religion.
