BaltNet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

BALTNET ( Balt ic Air Surveillance Net work ), the radar-based military air traffic control system of the air forces of Estonia , Latvia and Lithuania .

history

BaltNet has existed since 2000, after the Baltic states had already agreed in principle in 1994 and signed a corresponding agreement in 1998. Since the Baltic states became NATO members, the program has been integrated into the airspace surveillance of the North Atlantic Alliance.

organization

The headquarters of BaltNet, the Regional Airspace Surveillance Co-ordination Center (RASCC) , was for a long time in Karmėlava near Kaunas . In 2018 the Baltic states decided to set up their own national control centers. This was implemented at the beginning of 2020. The three facilities are able to monitor the national airspace as well as that of the two neighboring countries. Rotation between the three countries is therefore possible both in principle and in crisis situations.
