BARRAGOON is an abstract and strategic board game for two people from 2014 by Frank Warneke and Robert Witter . The game was published by WiWa Spiele and was awarded the game prize of the highly talented club Mensa in Deutschland eV (MinD) in 2016.

Theme and equipment

The game is an abstract strategy game that is played on a chessboard-like game board. The two players each play with a set of white or brown pieces, as well as with six-sided dice, which are called barragoon, on whose sides there are various arrow symbols.

In addition to the game instructions, the game material consists of:

  • a one-sided printed board with a grid of 7 by 9 fields,
  • 7 pieces each in two colors, white and brown,
  • 32 black barragoon.

Style of play

At the beginning of the game, both players choose a color and distribute their pieces according to the starting line-up on the field. In the middle of the game board, eight barragoon are placed on the spaces provided for this with the cross side up, the remaining 24 barragoon are placed next to the game board. The player with the white token is the starting player, then the players take turns to draw a token.

Each player has two stones with a two and four symbol and three stones with a three symbol. The stones may move as many fields in a horizontal or vertical line as the symbol indicates, and they may bend 90 ° each once in their move. In addition, they have the option of making a shortened move with one space less than indicated on the stone. A piece may not be moved over your own or an opponent's piece, a barragoon may only be jumped in the direction indicated on its upper side:

symbol rule
No way (cross) The barragoon must not be skipped.
One way (simple arrow) The barragoon may only be skipped in the direction of the arrow.
Two ways (double arrow) The barragoon may be skipped straight ahead in either direction of the arrow.
right turn The barragoon may be skipped by turning right in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Left turn The barragoon may be skipped by turning left in the direction indicated by the arrow.
All curves The barragoon can be skipped from all directions turning right and left.
The dice (barragoon) show six different symbols
Game situation at BARRAGOON

On a full move, a player can capture an opposing counter or a barragoon if his counter lands on it; on the other hand, a shortened move may not be taken. All tiles may capture all opposing tiles and barragoon, the only exception is that the two-piece tile may not capture a barragoon with the "All Curves" symbol. If a barragoon is beaten, it is taken from the field by the batting player and then placed on any field in any direction. If an opposing pawn is captured, it is removed from the field and both players each receive a barragoon, which they - starting with the player whose pawn was captured - placed on any field in any orientation. Basically, a piece that has been touched must also be moved, if this is possible.

The game ends when a player has no more pieces on the field or can no longer move the pieces that are still on the field. In this case the player in question has lost. If pieces of both players can still move, but are not able to capture opposing pieces or Barragoon in the further course, the game ends in a draw. A game is also tied if the players agree on it after every three identical moves.

variants

In addition to the standard description, the game instructions contain instructions for various variants and express rules of the game. As ways to speed up the game, the following options are given as phases:

  1. the player loses who has only one piece left with which to make a move before making his move.
  2. the player loses who has only two tokens left to make a move with before making his move.

These options can also be used to balance the level of play, if a weaker player plays with the classic rules and a more experienced player with the express rules.

In the open start variant, the eight Barragoon are placed on the starting grid with the "all curves" side up, instead of the "no way" side.
