The Federal Species Protection Ordinance ( BArtSchV ) was first issued on December 19, 1986 to protect wild animal and plant species.

It is a statutory ordinance issued on the basis of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG) , which expands and strengthens the species protection of Regulation (EC) No. 338/97 (Species Protection Ordinance) of 1984, through which the Washington Convention on Species Protection was put into force in all EU member states .

The current version of the Federal Species Protection Ordinance dates from February 16, 2005 and was issued as Article 1 of the Ordinance to revise the Federal Species Protection Ordinance and to adapt other legal provisions.

The list of protected plants and animals can be found in Appendix 1 to the Federal Species Protection Ordinance . It is not to be confused with the Red Lists of endangered animal and plant species published by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation .
