In 1959, the Romanian State Railways CFR purchased six diesel-electric locomotives of the 060 DA series from the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Factory Winterthur (SLM) with an output of 1,900 hp (1,397 kW). The diesel engine came from Sulzer , the electrical equipment from Brown, Boveri & Cie. in Baden / Switzerland . Both companies were consortium partners of SLM.

Only these six diesel locomotives were delivered from Switzerland ; the Romanian locomotive factory Electroputere in Craiova then received the license to replicate . The equipment for another ten locomotives came from Switzerland.

Factory numbers of the first six locomotives:

  • SLM 4246 - 4251
  • BBC 6095-6100
  • Sulzer ML585 - ML590

By 1993, 2496 copies had been delivered. The recipients were the CFR (1476), private Romanian railways (160) and the state railways in Poland (420 - BR ST43 ), Bulgaria (130) and China (379). Locomotives of this type still operate today in Romania, Italy, Spain, Poland, Bulgaria, Iran and China.

A number of locomotives received modified transmissions for 120 km / h (series 062); a further number was built for a gauge of 1,524 mm (series 067 and 068).
