The BINARIUM is a museum for personal computers and video game consoles in the western Dortmund district of Huckarde . The founder and director of the museum is the author and IT trainer Christian Ullenboom .

history

Christian Ullenboom came up with the idea for the museum in April 2011. Three years later, the former administration building of the Zeche Hansa was acquired as a property and in 2015 the renovation began. The BINARIUM was opened on December 8, 2016 and is open to the general public.

exhibition

The exhibition sorts the collections thematically, thus fully showing the evolution of personal computers and video game consoles. On one floor in four rooms, the museum exhibits a large number of exhibits, offers media stations and invites you to try them out. Thematize the rooms:

  • The Birth of an Industry, the Birth of a Culture - From First Experiments to a Worldwide Phenomenon (E1)
  • The console war - the cutthroat competition of the 1980s and 1990s and the resulting innovations (E2)
  • Playing in the microcosm and macrocosm - mobile gaming and immersion (E3)

Home computers, PCs and smartphones / tablets are also the focus.

Display boards provide background information and explain the exhibits. Visitors can try out the following: Atari 2600 , Nintendo Entertainment System , Super Nintendo Entertainment System , Sega Master System , Nintendo 64 , Sony PlayStation 1, Microsoft Xbox , Sony PlayStation 2 , Sega Dreamcast , Nintendo GameCube , Xbox 360 , Xbox One , PlayStation 3 , PlayStation 4 , Wii , Wii U and a kart. Furthermore, a ZX81 , C64 and MSX computer.

collection

The collection of consoles includes around 80 Pong machines and 160 different video game consoles from Generation 2 to 8. The museum has more than 270 home computers. 420 different peripheral devices and accessories for consoles and computers complete the inventory. The archive stores over 250 different magazine titles.
