The BKK Riedel-de Haën was a company health insurance fund that had existed since 1884 and was based in Seelze near Hanover . It was called BKK Riedel for short and has been open to members nationwide since 1999. On January 1, 2007, it was incorporated into the BKK FTE .

history

In 1861 the entrepreneur Eugen de Haën founded a factory for the production of high-purity salts and oxides in Hanover , which grew rapidly and had already employed 170 people for the 25th anniversary of its existence - a considerable number for the time. Influenced by Bismarck's social legislation and seriously concerned about the well-being of his employees, de Haën set up his own company health insurance fund in 1884, thus ensuring that his employees were fully covered.

After moving to Seelze in 1906, the company got into difficult waters. The First World War and the subsequent surge in inflation in the newly founded Weimar Republic worried the new company owner Wilhelm de Haën, Eugen de Haën's son. The temporary salvation consisted in the conversion to a stock corporation and the associated distribution of new capital. However, this step also opened the door for possible takeovers: In 1923, the Berlin pharmacist Johann Daniel Riedel acquired the ailing de Haën AG. The new name of the company was J. D. Riedel - E. de Haën AG, the head office became Berlin . Inevitably, in the course of the merger, the name of the company health insurance fund also changed: BKK Riedel - de Haën was born.

After the almost complete destruction of all plants in the Second World War and the successful reconstruction, the post-war period brought a significant increase in the number of members, when the German Bundestag passed the law on health insurance for pensioners in 1956 . The concentration processes in the chemical industry then led BKK RIEDEL from 1970 to changing sponsorships (including the Hoechst Group, Allied Signal Inc.) before it began its path to economic independence on July 1, 1996. Today it works closely with Honeywell Chemicals Seelze GmbH - the merger of Allied Signal and Honeywell . The former sponsoring company Riedel de Haën no longer exists in this form.

In 1999, the BKK RIEDEL opened nationwide and was in competition with numerous other health insurance companies . Nevertheless, it managed to triple the number of members to 4,100.

About the spelling

The pronunciation and spelling of his family name in southern Lower Saxony as "de Hähn" annoyed company founder Eugen de Haën enormously, as the name had to be pronounced "de Haan" according to its Dutch origin. He therefore decided to change his name to deliberately lengthen the "a".
