The BKS GmbH ( B oge & K asten - S Olingen) is a company that for the production of locks is known. It manufactures locks, locking cylinders , locking systems , object and escape door fittings . BKS GmbH has been part of the Gretsch-Unitas (GU) group since 1983 .

history

The master craftsman Adolf Boge and the locksmith Fritz Kasten founded the "Rheinische Türverbinderfabrik Boge & Kasten GmbH" on Klemens-Horn-Straße on May 8, 1903 in Solingen . They developed a door closer with which doors fall into the lock almost noiselessly , thus establishing the company's reputation. Further developments made the company the market leader in Europe. For reasons of space, the company later moved to the much larger factory halls at Beethovenstrasse 135 in the then still independent town of Wald . Opposite the factory, Adolf Boge had his factory owner's villa built in 1913.

The US company Yale and Town bought the company and merged it in 1927/1928 with the companies Damm & Ladwig and the United Riegel- und Schlossfabriken from Velbert to form BKS, based in Velbert. It employed more than 3000 people at peak times.

The round cylinder developed in 1938 revolutionized the design of security locks . Another new development in Europe in the 1950s was the panic lock , with which locked doors can be opened from the inside.

In 1983 the company changed back to German ownership and belongs to the Gretsch Unitas group based in Ditzingen . In 2008 BKS still had 650 employees.
