August Nies (born January 25, 1854 in Gießen , † June 25, 1931 in Mainz ) was a German mineralogist and teacher.

August Nies studied at the University of Giessen , where he received his doctorate on March 7, 1877. phil. received his doctorate . In his dissertation he described a newly discovered mineral, which he named after his teacher Johann August Streng (1830–1897), the Strengite . He taught as a teacher at the Realschule in Darmstadt and at the Realgymnasium in Mainz (from 1884). In addition to teaching, he studied mineralogy , genealogy and Hessian history .

August Nies was married to Helene Raubenau (1857-1923) since April 3, 1880. They had three children: Karl Nies (1881–1950), Anna Nies (married. Hirsch, 1887–1977) and Marie Nies (married. Rabenau, 1891–1977).
