from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The BLMRA 12 Hour is an endurance race for racing lawnmowers . The race, organized by the British Lawn Mowers Racing Association , has been held annually in Pulborough , UK, since 1978 . The winners included Stirling Moss and two-time winner Derek Bell .

The race regularly attracts celebrities from the motorsport scene , including Murray Walker , Alan deCadenet , Ferrari F1 designer John Barnard , Phil Tuffnell , Jason Gillespie , Chris Evans , Guy Martin , Karl Harris and John Hindhaugh . The actor Oliver Reed provided a team every year. In 2008, for example, 56 teams took part in four competition classes, with the winner covering a distance of 329 miles in the 12 hours. In the Guinness Book of Records, there is a race with the fastest lawnmower over a certain distance, as well as the longest distance that a lawnmower covered in 12 hours. The racing lawnmowers reach speeds of 80 km / h.

The races begin with a Le Mans start . In 2008, the race ran through the night from eight in the evening to eight in the morning. In 2009 the race was canceled completely due to bad weather, and in 2010 it was shortened to four hours due to the financial crisis, as only 21 teams had registered due to the tight financial situation.
