Lists on the subject

The BLU-97 CEB is an American cluster munition (bomblet) manufactured by General Dynamics .

description

Explosion of a BLU-97 near a ZSU-23-4 during an exercise.

The BLU-97 CEB was introduced to the US armed forces as well as to various NATO countries and allies in the late 1980s . The designation CEB represents C ombined E ffects B omblet (bomblet with combined effect). The BLU-97 has a yellow, cylindrical body and can be used against a wide range of targets due to their combined action. The BLU-97 is primarily used by cluster bombs .

function

After being ejected from the cluster bomb, the air flow opens the balloon screen at the stern and stabilizes the fall of the bomblet. The percussion fuse is activated by the rotation and the centrifugal forces . The arming sequence takes 2.6 seconds. The BLU-97 bomblet explodes on impact and has a triple effect: On the one hand with a shaped charge to combat armored vehicles. In addition, a fragment jacket is attached around the shaped charge, which releases around 300 steel fragments with high energy. These are primarily effective against soft targets and unarmored objects. Above the shaped charge there is a ring made of zirconium which generates burning fragments of high temperature and thus develops an additional fire effect.

Deployment systems

The BLU-97 CEB can be used with the following resources:

  • Cluster bomb CBU-87 with cluster container SUU-65 with 202 BLU-97.
  • Cluster bomb CBU-103 with cluster container SUU-65 and WCMD with 202 BLU-97.
  • Cluster bomb CBU-113 with cluster container SUU-65 and WCMD-ER with 202 BLU-97.
  • Cruise missile UMG-109D Thomahawk with 166 BLU-97.
  • Gliding bomb AGM-154A JSOW with 145 BLU-97.

commitment

The BLU-97 was used in the Second Gulf War in 1991 in Iraq, in the Kosovo War in Kosovo and Serbia in 1999, in the Iraq War in 2003 and in the war on terror in Afghanistan. During these missions, the BLU-97 had an average dud rate of around 5%. In unsuitable terrain, the dud rate was up to 30%.
