BMI-1 is a protein in human cells that belongs to the Polycomb group and is involved in the epigenetic regulation of genes in the cell nucleus . Synonyms for BMI-1 are Polycomb group RING finger protein 4 (PCGF4) or RING finger protein 51 (RNF51). In the human genome, BMI-1 is encoded by the BMI1 gene. BMI1 is the human homologue to the mouse gene Bmi1, which was originally identified as an integration site for a mouse leukemia virus (B cell-specific Moloney murine leukemia virus integration site). BMI1 has also been shown to be proto-oncogene in some forms of cancer in humans .
