The British Rail Class 71 of British Railways , first as a series called HA, was a series of electric locomotives for use on passenger and freight trains in the United Kingdom , the 1958 to 1960 of Doncaster Works was built. It was designed for the side- busbar network of the Southern Region and could only be used there.

Depending on the area of ​​application, it ran with 650 V (eastern and central area of ​​the "Southern Region" network) or 750 V direct current (western area). At first the machines were painted green, later they were given a blue livery with yellow fronts.

The Class 71 was mainly used in freight traffic , but it also pulled high-quality passenger trains such as the Golden Arrow and the Night Ferry . The decline in freight transport by rail led to the shutdown of 10 machines in the 1960s. In 1967/68 10 units were converted into diesel-electric locomotives and assigned to the HB series (later: Class 74 ). The remaining HA were renumbered in the TOPS system in 71001 to 71014 and shut down in November 1977. The 71001 locomotive (formerly E5001) escaped scrapping, it was preserved by the National Railway Museum .
