BSCW (Basic Support for Cooperative Work; German: "basic support for cooperation") is a groupware that supports the collaboration of users online . BSCW can be licensed free of charge for schools and universities. Commercial use is chargeable. The Fraunhofer Institute FIT operates a public BSCW server for testing and supporting smaller projects.

Products

The products are aimed primarily at companies, as well as teaching institutions and government organizations, but can also be used for private cooperation. BSCW can be used completely in the browser. The groupware is offered as a cloud or on-premise. The software license depends on the number of users.

There are currently two product variants of the BSCW. The BSCW Classic has continued the software since it was first published. The BSCW Social was developed in parallel, has a more modern design and focuses more on communication and the exchange of documents, as well as context-related and interactive collaboration.

Functions

The BSCW versions have 500 functions that are intended to simplify internal collaboration. They offer means of communication such as chat , messages or comments, as well as options for scheduling and task planning in the form of calendar entries or task areas. Documents on the local computer can be automatically synchronized with BSCW. In addition, work areas for documents as well as work groups can be created in which documents can then be edited and exchanged by several users together.

OrbiTeam Software was founded in 1998 as a spin-off for the further development and sale of BSCW and continues to maintain, develop and professionally support BSCW systems worldwide. OrbiTeam's services include support during installation and operation as well as adapting and expanding BSCW systems.
