The railcars 5 and 6 of the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn are meter-gauge electric railcars for pure cogwheel operation, which were supplied by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works and the BBC .
history
Based on experience with railcars 1 to 4 , in 1978 SLM and BBC delivered two railcars with the serial numbers 5132 and 5133, which were given the road numbers 5 and 6. Together with railcars 1 to 4, the railcars replaced the mountain locomotives from regular passenger traffic. In the years that followed, the six railcars handled the bulk of passenger traffic on the cogwheel route. Since the commissioning of the double multiple units 12 to 16 , the multiple units 5 and 6 have been used as a reserve as well as for internal tasks. During the construction phase of the Zugspitze cable car , the two railcars, together with the mountain locomotive 19 , were again increasingly used in regular passenger traffic in order to be able to offer a half-hourly service between Eibsee and Zugspitze.
technology
With four times 117 kilowatts of drive power, the vehicles are just as fast as railcars 1 to 4, offer 56 passengers seats, are 14.8 meters long and weigh 23.3 tons. The car body of the railcars is made of lightweight steel construction with longitudinal beads and has two drive motors in each of the two bogies. The drive gears are driven by an SLM axle drive. The braking equipment of the railcars consists of a resistance brake as a service brake, a gear brake acting on all four gearboxes and a ratchet brake acting on all four drive gears.
The two railcars were equipped with control cars for operation right from the start , which means they are able to drive with a featured control car on mountain journeys without an additional train attendant (in one-man operation). The correspondingly equipped cars are control cars 21 (for railcars 5) and 22 (for railcars 6).
