Baʾal I.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baʾal I was from 680 to 660 BC. King of Tire . He concluded a vassal treaty with the Assyrian king Aššur-aḫḫe-iddina , which on the one hand established the trading rights of Tire and on the other hand obliged him to assist the Assyrian in the fight against Abdi-Milkutti of Sidon . However, as part of Aššur-aḫḫe-iddina's Egyptian campaign, Baʾal I changed the fronts and stood together with Taharqa against the Assyrians. As a result, Tire was besieged, although it is not clear whether the city could be conquered. It is known, however, that Baʾal I now had to pay tribute to the Assyrians .
