Back Home is an extended play by the German synth-pop band And One . The EP was released on January 13, 2012 on the SPV label .

background

After the 2011 album Tanzomat , which received rather mediocre reviews , And One started working on the new album STOP , which was originally announced as the last album. For the first time since the 2001 split, Steve Naghavi worked together with Rick Schah and Joke Jay on an album. A farewell tour was planned for the end of 2013, but had to be postponed later. Before the release of the actual album on May 25, 2012, the band pushed the release of the Back Home EP, which is also the first release from the album.

Mastering of the CD was done by Nico Wieditz. The songs were produced by Steve Naghavi and Wieditz. The backing vocals in Back Home are from Sophia Lengert. Rick was also programmed by Olaf Wollschläger, who also mixed the live track High .

Music style and song information

For the first time since 2001 in the successful line-up of the 1990s, this EP tried to get back to the roots and develop tension for the next album. The traditional synth-pop of the band can be heard on this EP.

Back Home is to be understood as a programmatic title. In fact, And One tried to get back to their musical roots with the album and this EP. The text says that they are now returning from Mars to Berlin. According to the text, they fall from heaven to hell to burn people there - a mistake they think. That could jokingly refer to their previous album, with which they broke new ground and were not very successful with it. The title is also represented twice as a remix on the EP , once by Nico Wieditz and once by Daniel Myer from Haujobb . The remix made by Nico Wieditz is somewhat reminiscent of Depeche Mode .

The title Rick is dedicated to band member Rick Schah and a very ironic song ("Everybody knows he is ready for the job of the president of Marzahn"). Rick is portrayed as a young party-goer ("There was a guy who wants to party every day, every night"), but who did not have a very high social status ("He had no money, had no girlfriend; he was feeling alright") .

Wounds is a ballad that is more musically based on the band's 2000 releases.

High , a B-side of the Sometimes single from 1997, was recorded at the final concert of the Sextron Tour in Peine . Joke Jay took over the vocals.

Missing Track tells of a person who misses a loved one and always tries to make contact with them ("Day by day you get my letters"). This is a more rock-oriented song in which the guitar is in the foreground and which is somewhat reminiscent of The Cure . According to the credits it is a cover version by the band The Missing Band . This does not exist, however, and Steve Naghavi is named as the songwriter .

At the end of the song Missing Track , after 55 seconds of silence, there is a so-called hidden track .

Reviews

Back Home was rated differently by the critics . Terrorverlag gave the album 5.5 out of 10 stars. "First of all: Thanks to Steve's voice, the guys sound like they always have, one confidently refrains from major experiments, but unfortunately I lack the expected new energy, because the opening title track" Back Home "gets off to a rather sluggish and sluggish pace, although it is actually at the latest Ignites relatively well in the chorus, but a real hit looks different. "

Medienkonverter rated the song good with 4 out of 5 stars. "Those of background singer Sophia Lengert geträllerte Bridge brings at least a little variety to the best song structure. If one classifies these harbingers of the upcoming album “STOP” historically, there have been worse album appetizers (“Sex Drive / Destroyer”), but also better, because they have a lasting effect (“Military Fashion Show” and “Krieger”). Back Home is okay, nothing more. "

In the review of SparklingPhotos the same And One sound is noted, nevertheless the song and the entire EP are highly praised and rated with 8.5 out of 10 stars. “Even if And One moved away from new realms, the EP is a complete success. Who needs new ideas when it always works so well? "
