The path is accessible for hikers along its entire length, for mountain bikers and riding horses partially on marked sections.

History and topography

Road construction began in the early 1980s in cooperation with the National Park Service , the California Department of Parks and Recreation , and private initiatives.

The inclines and declines of the Backbone Trail are largely even over the peaks and canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains. From the lowest point at sea level, the Ray Miller Trailhead in Point Mugu State Park, to the highest point Sandstone Peak (948 m), the highest point of the Santa Monica Mountains, the path is flat only in sections.
