history

1993 aerial photo

Around 1965 there were extensive deposits of gravel in large areas around the Danube . Such a gravel pit began to be excavated on the border with Breitenlee . Groundwater was soon reached and a pond was created. Around the mid-1970s, the gravel pond reached its maximum size between Spargelfeldstrasse, Bibernellweg, Ziegelhofstrasse and an adjacent sports field.

After the work was stopped, it was uncertain how things should go on with the water surface. At first the plan was to fill the pit with garbage, which was discarded again. A group of Viennese city gardeners, supported by seasonal workers from Burgenland, began to design the embankments. No budget was provided and the shrubs and other material were handed over by the municipal tree nurseries in Albern, Eßling and Mauerbach.

In 2009, the water table rose due to prolonged rainfall. The water level rose over the bank and numerous places were flooded. The resulting damage was repaired in 2011.

Nowadays the bathing pond is used for swimming , fishing or ice skating .

The bathing pond

The Hirschstetten bathing pond is open all year round and free of charge. The pond has a children's playground, a "baby bay" with sand , a dog zone with an outlet and a dog bathing zone , although the dog ban is only lifted there. Barbecuing is forbidden everywhere, and waterfowl are not allowed to be fed in order to avoid contamination of the water by the animals being defecated. In addition, there is a snack stand near the baby bay, the "Baby Bay Buffet", which is open on certain very warm days in the summer season.

Water quality

The bathing water quality is examined three times per season in the laboratory for environmental medicine and the results are then published.
