Badlands is an arcade game that Atari Games released in 1989. Domark laterporteditto several home computers. The implementation took place under Atari Games' console label "Tengen".

The game is set against a post- nuclear war backdrop, where dangerous races are held in the deserted areas. Three armed cars compete against each other.

Gameplay

Badlands is in his mind the descendant of Atari's previous racing games Super Sprint and Championship Sprint . Similar to the sprint titles, in Badlands three cars compete against each other in a three-lap race, with the track being small and always shown in a total overview - it is only displayed on a single screen, without scrolling .

Bonuses are collected in the form of wrenches, which can be exchanged for car upgrades in the shop between races (better tires, better acceleration, etc.).

Unlike in the sprint games, the player can shoot in Badlands . The shots of the standard built-in weapon have little effect: They slow down the victim if they are fired repeatedly. In the shop, the player can buy missiles that can destroy the target car. However, the driver of the destroyed car - with lost time and again with the vehicle intact - is put on the track again.

The slopes have new obstacles, such as mines and barricades that go up and down.

Versions

The home computer versions were published by Domark under the Tengen label. Development was carried out by Teque , under the leadership of Matt Furniss . All versions have the same gameplay, but - depending on the system - had to accept graphical compromises.

The Amiga and Atari ST versions were the most faithful to the original, although the C64 version was also very similar - apart from the more angular graphics.

The Spectrum and Amstrad CPC conversions were almost identical because they were directly ported.

Re-releases

The game was re-released in 2005 as part of Midway Arcade Treasures 3 for the PlayStation 2 , GameCube, and Xbox . It was also re-released in the Midway Arcade Treasures Deluxe Edition for PC in 2006 .
