Baetis is a genus of insects from the order of mayflies (Ephemeroptera).

Males have turban eyes .

Characteristics of the larva

The brownish colored body is up to 9 millimeters long, narrow and not flattened. The head is vertical compared to the body axis. The eyes are arranged on the side of the head. The antennae are a lot longer than the head is wide. The short mandibles do not protrude beyond the front edge of the head. The shape of the thorax is high and strongly arched. The legs are strong. There are no lateral spines on the last segment of the abdomen. The terminal thread has hairs on both sides, whereas the cerci only on the inside. There is no dark zone on the tail threads. The seven pairs of tracheal gills are simple and oval.

Occurrence and way of life

The species of the genus Baetis are floating forms. Their habitat are mountain streams as well as slowly flowing waters in the plain. If they are disturbed they move by jumping with blows with their abdomen. Their diet consists of detritus and thread algae. The female adults lay their eggs under water. The generation period is one year.
