history

Baga was once a fishing village, located on a headland on Lake Chad, whose fish market was regionally famous. As the water level continued to sink, the area around Baga silted up.

Islamist Terrorism and Destruction 2015

The city was hit by an attack by the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram in April 2013 , in which at least 185 people died and over 2000 buildings were destroyed. As a result of the attack, around 2,000 residents fled to the border town of Bosso in neighboring Niger . On January 3, 2015, there was another attack on Baga, in which the soldiers stationed there to protect the city fled. It was the fifth attack in two years. On January 7th, the city was burned down in a massacre , according to the BBC, up to 2000 dead are assumed. A government spokesman denied this, and Reuters reported at least 100 deaths. Musa Alhaji Bukar, a senior government official, said the city was "virtually non-existent".
