The Bagana volcano is one of the youngest and at the same time most active in the Melanesian archipelago and dominates the center of the island of Bougainville at an altitude of 1750 meters . The symmetrical crater was built up by several superimposed andesitic lava flows. Non-explosive discharge of viscous lava is characteristic of the eruption behavior of the Bagana, but more explosive eruptions with pyroclastic currents have also occurred in the past .

Historical records report several eruptions of the volcano, including on March 15, 1842, around 1865, December 1883, 1894 to 1895, 1897, 1899, July 15, 1908, September 7, 1937, May 15, 1938, January 1939 , April 1943, 1945 to 1947, December 1948 to December 1951, February 29 to October 1952, June to September 1953, 1956, 1960, July 26, 1961, February 15, 1962 to 1963, April 24, 1964 to 1965, 20 March 1966 to November 30, 1967, August 1968, May 1970 to August 1971, 1972 to 1995 (1 million cubic meters of lava output), September 16, 2000 to 2009.
