The Bahia de Cartagena de Indias in the center of the map |
The Bahía de Cartagena de Indias , also Bahía de Cartagena, is a bay off Cartagena on the Caribbean coast of Colombia in the Department of Bolívar . To the north is Ciénaga de la Virgen ( German Swamp of the Virgin ), a coastal lagoon with a sea connection, to the south the Bahía Barbacoas .
geography
The bay opens to the west to the Caribbean Sea. The Isla de Tierra Bomba blocks much of the access . The entrance to the bay to the north of it, with a width of 1.9 km, is called Bocagrande ( German Big Mouth ). It has a water depth of only 2 m, as breakwaters were built here under the water surface as early as the colonial times. The access south of the island is called Bocachica ( German girl mouth ). It is 0.5 km wide and has a water depth of 23 m. The Barú peninsula forms the southern end . The bay is connected to the Río Magdalena in the south by the El Dique Canal . The Colombian city of Cartagena de Indias is located on the north bank of the bay .
The bay has an area of 82 km² and a water depth of up to 30 m (mean water depth 16 m).
history
In 1741, during the siege of Cartagena, a fierce battle between Spanish and British troops broke out around the entrances to the bay . By sinking their warships in the narrow channels, the Spaniards were only able to delay the entry of the British, but the city was successfully defended.
