Baharampur ( Bengali : বহরমপুর ), also Berhampore , is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal with 195,223 inhabitants (2011 census). 304,487 people live in the metropolitan area. It is located in the Murshidabad district about 200 km north of Kolkata and is on the east side of the Bhagirathi, a tributary of the Ganges .

history

Baharampur was fortified by the British East India Company in 1757 after the Battle of Plassey and served as a military base until 1870. This was converted into a municipality in 1876 and became the seat of the Murshidabad district. Berhampore College was founded in 1853 and passed to a local committee in 1888

Baharampur has a gender ratio of 947 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The city had a literacy rate of 90.06% in 2011 (men: 92.25%, women: 87.74%). Literacy is thus far above the national average and that of West Bengal. Almost 90.1% of the population are Hindus , approx. 9.1% are Muslims , approx. 0.3% each are Jainas and Christians and approx. 0.2% did not indicate any religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 7.1% of the population are children under 6 years of age. 22.2% live in slums and slums.

Infrastructure

The city's train station opened in 1862 and is now part of the Indian Railways' Eastern Railway Zone .

economy

Initially, most of the city's residents were government employees and there were few traders. Gradually the importance of the city grew due to its geographical location and today it is also a business center. Due to its historical importance, tourists also come to the city.
