Düren depot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Two railway depots (Bw) in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Düren were designated as Bahnbetriebswerk Düren .

Until the early 1930s, the depot was in the immediate vicinity of Düren station . In 1930, construction began on a new depot, which, coming from Cologne, was to be located in front of the Düren station at the Vorbahnhof . On September 11, 1933, this new depot was put into operation and the old depot was then given up. The depot had a 26-track roundhouse with a turntable in front . This had a diameter of 23.6 meters. The Bw also included a repair hall for freight wagons, an administration building, a spare parts store, a coaling plant and a water tower. Small repairs were carried out on the locomotives in a rectangular workshop between the turntable and the administration building . There was also an apprentice workshop for the mechanic and high voltage electrician apprentices.

Steam locomotives of the series 38, 55, 56, 74 and 92 were located in Düren, among others . From 1960 diesel locomotives were also stationed in Düren, initially locomotives of the DB class V 60 , and from 11 May 1962 also locomotives of the DB class V 100 . In addition, the first accumulator railcars of the DB series ETA 150 and associated control cars were assigned to the Düren depot in 1961 . 1966 Uerdingen rail buses of the VT 95 series followed and the last steam locomotives left the depot. At the end of the 1960s, diesel locomotives of the DB class 290 for heavy shunting and mainline service were located in Düren, which were mainly used in the Aachen West train station . In 1970, large diesel locomotives of the DB class V 160 followed after just one year in Düren were replaced by the new DB class 215 . In 1978 the use of Uerdingen rail buses was given up. These were replaced by the ETA 150 series, the number of which had grown rapidly over the years and which were to characterize operations on the branch lines in the area until the end of the depot.

On May 28, 1961, the Bergheim depot was attached to Düren as a branch, and the Jülich depot followed on September 29, 1962 . The repair of freight wagons was stopped on December 31, 1976 and on December 9, 1978 the water tower was blown up because it was dilapidated .

On December 1, 1983, the Düren depot lost its independence and became a branch of the new Aachen depot until it was closed on July 1, 1986. In 1989 the remaining facilities were finally torn down.
