Bad Münstereifel is a stopping point and former train station on the Erft Valley Railway . It is located at km 13.8 and is the end point of the route from the direction of Euskirchen . It was built near the Werther Tor and previously had extensive track systems. In addition to the station building with attached sandstone and half-timbered goods shed in the Swiss country house style, there was also a stand-alone engine shed and a water tower , an extensive freight yard and, at times, even a scales.
history
The station was built and put into operation in 1890 at kilometer 13.8. In 1913 the building in Bad Münstereifel was expanded and received a platform roof. As part of the rationalization measures of 1925, the locomotive no longer stayed in Bad Münstereifel at night, but was driven back to Euskirchen empty . This also made the shed superfluous; this was demolished in 1929 and rebuilt by a local family.
The number of tickets sold in Bad Münstereifel in 1927 was 75,201. The regular cattle markets in Bad Münstereifel, to which the railway brought up to 10,000 animals annually, as well as the extensive timber loading were also of importance.
At the end of 1944, traffic on the line was stopped due to severe war damage, and the Eifelstadt could no longer be reached by train. This situation lasted until mid-1948 due to the blown bridges. After the war, only cleanup work was carried out in the Münstereifel train station. Only on June 2, 1948 did a train run into the station again. Until then, travelers had to constantly use overcrowded buses or walk.
In October 1955 the water tower , which had not been used for a long time, was torn down. In 1957 and 1968 the station building was modernized and remodeled, whereby the toilet block also disappeared.
In 1975 passenger traffic was stopped on weekends from Saturday afternoon. Starting with the 1975 summer timetable, through coaches drove experimentally from Münster (Westf) to Bad Münstereifel for around a year . In the mid-1970s, regular freight traffic to Bad Münstereifel was discontinued.
If necessary, however, wood was still being loaded and the Melder delicatessen store, located in Bad Münstereifel, received wagons with fresh produce such as fruit and vegetables. The Münstereifel station was dissolved in 1982 and subordinated to the Euskirchen station . In 1990 the technology in the station was reduced to Simplified Train Operation (VZB). Until around 1993/94, wood from the forests around the spa town was still handled in the Bad Münstereifel train station . The Greven Fettchemie company also occasionally used the railway station's track system for handling goods.
During track renewal work on the Erft Valley Railway in 1998, all points that branch off from the main track (track 1) were removed from Bad Münstereifel station. Also the now useless tracks of the former freight yard are no longer there, the area has meanwhile been built over. In 2000, the station building was sold by DB AG to the city of Bad Münstereifel. This then had the exterior restored to its original state in accordance with monument protection guidelines. Since 2003, the station has housed the spa administration, the office of the Eifel and tourism agency and a bicycle shop in the goods shed.
