Buenavista train station
The Buenavista train station is a terminus in the Delegación Cuauhtémoc of the Mexican capital Mexico City . The important traffic junction was opened in 1873 and is today the departure station for line 1 of the S-Bahn ( Ferrocarril Suburbano ) to Cuautitlán . Furthermore, next to the train station there is also the subway station of the same name on line B and a stop for the Metrobús express bus system .
history
The Buenavista train station was opened as part of the Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México on January 20, 1873 by President Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada . At that time the station was the starting point of Mexico's first railway line to Veracruz . Under the presidency of Porfirio Díaz (also known as "Porfiriato"), the country experienced a strong expansion of the railways to over 20,000 kilometers. As a result, the number of passengers increased immensely, and in the 1920s the train station was transformed into a “gateway to the world”.
In 1958, the state government demolished the station and three years later a new station with twelve tracks was built 500 meters further north. The Tlatelolco housing estate ( Conjunto Urbano Nonoalco Tlatelolco ) was built on the site of the former station . In 1994 the first electrified railway line was opened between the capital, i.e. from the Buenavista station, and Querétaro.
With the privatization of rail transport in Mexico on September 1, 1999 and the subsequent suspension of all passenger trains, the station was initially orphaned. Only with the construction of Mexico's first S-Bahn, the Ferrocarril Suburbano , in 2008 did passengers enter the station again. In the course of this, the building received a comprehensive renovation, the tracks were reduced from twelve to four. The S-Bahn trains are currently running to Cuautitlán .
In 2012, a large shopping center called “Forum Buenavista” opened directly next to the train station.
