Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada (born April 25, 1823 in Xalapa , † April 21, 1889 in New York City ) was President of the Republic of Mexico .

Sebastian Lerdo de Tejada studied in Puebla and entered public life in 1855 as a member of the Supreme Court .

In 1857 he was Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs for three months under President Ignacio Comonfort .

In 1858 he was elected to the Congress of the Union of Mexico and President of the same, refused the ministerial post offered by Benito Juarez , fled to the north with the government after the victory of the French at Puebla in 1863, then took the ministry of the in San Luis Potosí Exterior. As a follower of Benito Juarez, he led an unsteady life until he was victorious.

On Lerdo's advice, Emperor Maximilian I was shot in 1867. He was then President of the Supreme Court under Juarez's presidency, stood as a candidate against Juarez in the presidential election in the summer of 1871, but was defeated, but took over after his death (July 18, 1872) provisionally and after his almost unanimous election on August 18 definitely the presidency. In July 1876 he was re-elected president, but was overthrown by Porfirio Diaz in November and forced to flee to the United States .
