The train station is located in the city center and faces west to east. It has three tracks, all of which are used for passenger traffic. They are located on the house platform and on a central platform . The station building has the shape of a riding station that spans the tracks. Although the electrified part of the Sasshō line extends one station further to the campus of the medical university (Hokkaidō-Iryōdaigaku), Ishikari-Tōbetsu was the starting point for all diesel-powered trains in rural areas and thus a system transfer station until 2020 .

history

For the first time, Tōbetsu was connected to the rail network by a small train : the 11.3 km long line of the Kōtō kidō ( 江 当 軌道 ) with a gauge of 762 mm connected the city with Ebetsu . In order to reduce construction costs, the bridging of the Tōbetsu-gawa and Ishikari-gawa rivers was dispensed with at the respective ends . The route, used by steam-powered trains, was opened on August 18, 1927. On November 20, 1934 opened railway ministry the section Soen -Ishikari-Tobetsu the Sasshō line. This was completed on October 3, 1935 with the commissioning of the Ishikari-Tōbetsu-Urausu section. Due to the faster and more efficient competition, the Kōtō kidō stopped operating on May 1, 1936.

In June 1949, the first section of another small railway was opened. After its completion in 1952, the Tōbetsu chōei kidō ( 当 別 町 営 軌道 ) from Ishikari-Tōbetsu station to Ōbukuro. The 31.5 km long route with a gauge of 762 mm suffered severe damage from Typhoon Marie on September 26, 1954 . These were so large that they did not need to be restarted. For cost reasons, the Japanese State Railways stopped handling goods on February 1, 1979, and checked baggage on February 1, 1984. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new company JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 . The current station building was completed in November 1994. The electrification of the suburban part of the Sasshō Line took place on June 1, 2012. The diesel-powered trains from Ishikari-Tōbetsu to Shin-Totsukawa were discontinued on April 17, 2020.
