The station was opened on November 29, 1875 together with the Zwickau – Falkenstein line by the Zwickau-Lengenfeld-Falkensteiner Railway Company (ZLF). After the opening of operations, the through station was the largest intermediate station on the railway line alongside Auerbach. In addition to the station building (a type of construction similar to the private train station in Zwickau) and the goods shed, a farm building was also built. Because of the established water station, the station already had a certain operational importance.

In 1876 the ZLF was nationalized, after which the station was expanded for the first time, and further additions followed by the end of the 1890s.

In connection with the construction of the Lengenfeld – Göltzschtalbrücke railway line , the station was completely rebuilt from 1904 for around 1.2 million marks. Instead of six tracks, the station now had ten tracks, and a new reception building and a new goods shed were built. The line from Göltzschtalbrücke was opened on May 16, 1905, making Lengenfeld a separation station and local rail hub. This was accompanied by an increase in the volume of traffic, around 62,000 t of goods were handled in 1899, in 1913 it was already around 92,000 t, and in the same period the number of passengers handled rose from around 133,000 to around 200,000.

In the 1930s, a small locomotive was stationed in the station, for which a separate shed was built.

In 1958, traffic on the Weißensand – Mühlwand section of the Lengenfeld – Göltzschtalbrücke railway line was discontinued; the remaining traffic to Wolfspütz was discontinued in 1972, making Lengenfeld a through station again. The route to Göltzschtalbrücke was still used to park damaged wagons from RAW Zwickau until the end of the 1980s .

Until the 1990s, the station was still busy with goods traffic, which was discontinued before the Zwickau – Falkenstein line was renovated. After the renovation in 1997, only three continuous tracks with an island platform remained.
