Okoppe was a separation station on the Nayoro Main Line , which ran from Nayoro to Engaru . Here the Kōhin south line branched off to Ōmu . The station was located west of the city center and was oriented from the southwest to the northeast. It had three tracks for passenger traffic, which were on the house platform and on a central platform . The latter was connected to the station building on the northwest side of the facility by a level crossing . Two short sidings led to a goods shed northeast of the reception building. There was a small depot with a turntable on the south side of the facility .

The station building was demolished and replaced in 2000 by a service station ( Michi no eki ), which also serves as a bus station . A small museum, which has been in existence since 1992, is attached to the rest stop, in which various objects relating to the history of the railway in Okoppe are exhibited. One of the platform tracks was preserved; Two diesel railcars of the KiHa 22 series are permanently parked on this , which have been converted into a hostel called “Rogosa Express”.

history

The Ministry of Railways opened the station on March 25, 1921, together with the Naka-Yūbetsu -Okoppe section of the Nayoro Main Line . The station was the terminus for half a year, until the opening of the subsequent section to Kami-Okoppe on October 1, 1921. The opening of the Kōhin-Südlinie, branching off from the Nayoro main line, took place on September 15, 1935. On the latter, the railway was from Discontinued November 1, 1944 as a rationing measure in the final stages of the Pacific War . About three months after the end of the war, operations were resumed on December 5, 1945.

From 1962 to 1986 express trains also stopped in Okoppe . In 1968 the Japanese State Railways opened a small container terminal . However, it stopped handling goods on November 15, 1982, and checked baggage on February 1, 1984. The Kōhin south line was shut down on July 15, 1985, making Okoppe only a through station. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 . This also shut down the Nayoro main line on May 1, 1989.
