The Engaru Station ( Jap. 遠軽駅 , Engaru-eki ) is a train station on the Japanese island of Hokkaido . It is located in the Okhotsk Sub-prefecture in the Engaru City area .

Engaru is a terminus and former separation station on the main Sekihoku line . This leads from Asahikawa via Kitami to Abashiri and is operated by the company JR Hokkaido . All trains running here stop at this station. In long-distance four connecting daily Okhotsk - Express couples the prefecture capital of Sapporo with Asahikawa and Abashiri. There is also the Kitami express train from Asahikawa to Kitami and back once a day . In local transport there is a regional train to Abashiri every two to three hours , while the section leading through the Kitami Mountains to Kamikawa is used by just one regional train a day.

The station is served by various long-distance and regional lines of the company Hokkaidō Kitami Bus , as well as lines of the city bus companies of Engaru and Saroma .

The train station is close to the city center and faces south to north. It has four tracks, three of which are used for passenger traffic. These are located on the main platform and on a covered central platform , which is connected to the reception building on the east side of the facility by a covered overpass .

The Sekihoku Line reaches the station from the southwest and continues south. As a result, all passenger and freight trains have to turn their heads here (i.e. turn around). Originally the facility was built as a through station . In the north, the route continued towards Yūbetsu on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk . However, since it was closed, the track ends after a few hundred meters. At the western edge of the facility there is a turntable that is no longer in use , the associated roundhouse has been demolished.

The Railway Authority (later the Railway Ministry ) opened the route from Yasukuni via Engaru to Kaisei on November 1, 1915. It was the Yūbetsu-Kleinbahnlinie ( 湧 別 軽 便 線 , Yūbetsu-keibensen ), a temporary narrow-gauge railway with a gauge of 762 mm. This was already on 7 November 1916, the usual Cape gauge mm 1067 umgespurt and integrated into the existing Yubetsu line.

From Asahikawa , Engaru could only be reached by a long detour via Nayoro , which is why the Ministry of Railways started a direct connection through the Kitami Mountains in the early 1920s. Engaru was the eastern starting point of the extensive construction project. On October 10, 1927, the opening of the first section of the Sekihokutō line ( 石 北 東線 , Sekihokutō-sen ) to Maruseppu. With the commissioning of the summit tunnel on October 1, 1932, the direct connection was completed. On the same day, the Sekihokusai Line ( 石 北 西 線 , Sekihokusai-sen ), the Sekihokutō Line and the Yūbetsu Line south of Engaru were given the new common name Sekihoku Line ( 石 北 線 , Sekihoku-sen ). . The north of Engaru located part of the Yūbetsu line merged with the Nayoro main line .

In 1934 Engaru station, which had advanced to become a traffic junction, received a new reception building. The Japanese State Railways gave the Sekihoku Line the new name Sekihoku Main Line on April 1, 1961. In 1967 she set up a small container terminal . For cost reasons, the state railway stopped checking in luggage on February 1, 1984, and also stopped handling goods on March 14, 1985. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new company JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 . This shut down the Nayoro main line on May 1, 1989, and since then the station can only be approached from one direction.
