This is located on the ground floor of the neighboring Parabo shopping and administration center .

A small container terminal operated by JR Freight is located to the northeast of the station . The single-track system is mainly used for loading agricultural products during harvest time. history

Kitami Station was originally called Nokkeushi ( 野 付 牛 ). It was opened on September 25, 1911 when the Railway Authority (later the Ministry of Railways ) opened a section of the Abashiri Main Line ( 網 走 本 線 , Abashiri-honsen ) coming from Ikeda . On October 5, 1912 the section from Nokkeushi to Abashiri followed . On November 18 of the same year the opening of the first section of the Yūbetsu line branching off here ( 湧 別 線 , Yūbetsu-sen ) to Rubeshibe took place. From October 1, 1932, the Yūbetsu Line was part of the Sekihoku Line ( 石 北 線 , Sekihoku-sen ).

The Ministry of Railways opened short connecting routes to a slaughterhouse and a grain silo in 1933 and 1937 . In 1940 another siding was added to an ammunition factory, which was in operation until the end of the Pacific War . On October 1, 1942, the station was renamed Kitami. The Japanese State Railways , which was responsible from 1949, set up a storage facility for passenger and freight trains a year later, including a roundhouse . The Abashiri main line was divided into two parts on April 1, 1961: While the part between Kitami and Abashiri together with the Sekihoku line formed the new Sekihoku main line, the part between Kitami and Ikeda had the new name Chihoku Line ( 池 北 線 , Chihoku Line ).

In 1983 the state railway built a new station building. On November 1, 1986, it stopped checking in luggage for cost reasons and replaced the previous cargo handling with a container terminal . As part of the privatization of the state railways, the station became the property of the new company JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 , while JR Freight took over the freight traffic. JR Hokkaido planned to shut down the Chihoku line, but transferred it on June 4, 1989 to the Hokkaidō Chihoku Kōgen Tetsudō , a company supported by regional authorities. The Chihoku line was given the new name Furusato Ginga line . However, the new owner did not succeed in operating the line profitably, so it had to be shut down on April 21, 2006. Since then, Kitami station has only been served by the main Sekihoku line.
