Reading is a major train station in the city of Reading, west of London. It is at the north end of the city center, about five minutes from the shopping and business center and not far from the River Thames .
Connected is a bus station with urban and regional connections as well as the RailAir bus connection to the airport at London Heathrow .
Reading is an important transfer point on the UK rail network. There is also considerable local traffic, particularly towards London.
history
The station opened in 1840 as the provisional terminus of the Great Western Main Line . As early as 1841, the line to Bristol was expanded , further connections from Reading were opened in the following years. In 1860 a new entrance building was built, which is still there today. In 1989 a new station building was opened right next to it, which is now used for passenger traffic.
Transport links
The main route is the Great Western Main Line from London Paddington to Oxford or Bristol. The line has four tracks and is not electrified. The operations are managed by the First Great Western Railway Company. Further routes lead north to Birmingham and south to Winchester, Southampton and Bournemouth. A branch line leads to Guildford and London Gatwick Airport .
There are numerous trains to London Paddington, with the long-distance trains between Reading and Paddington in particular not stopping and covering the 58 km in around 30 minutes.
