The Tribsees train station was one of four train stations in the small town of Tribsees in the Vorpommern-Rügen district in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern . Since 1895 the state branch line Rostock – Tribsees and the small railway Velgast – Tribsees (Franzburger Südbahn) met here, in 1896 the private branch line Greifswald – Grimmen – Tribsees was added and from 1901 the also private branch line Stralsund – Tribsees . Thus Tribsees had become the local railway junction.

After the Second World War, all of the railway lines leading to Tribsees were dismantled as reparations except the Velgast – Tribsees line . The previously insignificant line from Velgast remained in operation until 1995, but the transport volume was almost zero after the economic changes caused by the fall of 1989/90.

history

From the 1880s there were the first serious plans for a railway construction in the region around Tribsees, from 1894 one then dealt with the exact location of the station. The city of Tribsees had already decided beforehand to provide the necessary building land free of charge. Initially, only a shared station east of the city between the small railway Velgast – Tribsees and the branch line Greifswald – Grimmen – Tribsees was planned, and a possible route to Stralsund was also taken into account. But since the Rostock – Tribsees route had already been decided by the Mecklenburg Friedrich Franz Railway , all railway administrations finally agreed on a common train station south of the city.

The final plan was completed in 1895 and the station finally opened on November 16, 1895 together with the Rostock – Tribsees line as a state station. With the conclusion of a joint operating contract on January 1, the Velgast – Tribsees line was also integrated with its own small station section north of the state station; previously, its end point was the Tribsees Steintor station east of the city. On November 26, 1896, the Grimmen railway line was added, and in 1901 the Stralsund line, which both shared the state railway station. All non-state railway companies contributed to the operating costs of the station, but the main burden of the costs was borne by the state railway, which caused constant annoyance between the companies during the entire operating time.

After the Second World War, all railway lines were dismantled as reparations, only the Velgast – Tribsees railway line and the short section of the Tribsees – Tribsees Ost railway line on the Stralsund – Tribsees railway line remained. Some station tracks - mainly the tracks of the Velgast small train - were also dismantled. From then on, the Deutsche Reichsbahn owned a train station without any connection to the rest of its rail network, the two private railways mainly used the facilities of the depot and were responsible for shunting. The Franzburger Südbahn was the only one still running to the station, but no longer had its own track system. Only with the final nationalization of the remaining railways could the complicated conditions at the station be resolved.

After the Second World War, the volume of traffic slowly increased. The small industrial companies increased their production, agricultural products were still being shipped. Furthermore, an agrochemical center as well as the engineering, civil engineering and transport construction company (ITV) with its own siding were established in the 1970s . The latter company was responsible for the expansion of the roads around Tribsees. From then on, large amounts of building materials were handled in Tribsees. A coal trade used the ITV connection after 1983. The last changes were the construction of a large gantry crane for a metal construction company, the facility was completed in 1985 but was never used. After 1989/90 the transport volume collapsed completely. On January 1, 1995, Tribsees was closed to freight traffic, and passenger traffic continued until May 27, 1995. The Velgast line was closed in July 1996. The tracks were completely removed and the locomotive and goods sheds demolished. The listed entrance building and an auxiliary building have been preserved. They are used as living space. The adjacent, paved green area has been offered as a camping pitch since summer 2019 and offers travelers overnight accommodation.
