List of train stations in Finland |
The station Turku ( Finnish Turku asema ), also known as Central Station Turku ( Finnish Turun päärautatieasema , Swedish Åbo central station called), is the most important of the railway stations in Turku . It is located in District VII in the inner city district (Ratapihankatu 37).
history
The station started operating with the opening of the Turku to Tampere railway in 1876. Since there were only connections to Tampere and Toijala at first, the station was initially of little importance. That changed in 1899 with the commissioning of the route along the coastal region to Helsinki . The present station building was built from 1938 to designs by Martti Välikangas and Väinö Vähäkallio and was completed in 1940. It is a simple functional building that was last extensively renovated between 2005 and 2006. A former locomotive hall is located near the station, which has been used as an exhibition and event center (Logomo) since Turku 2011 .
traffic
Today there are InterCity2 connections to Helsinki via Karis and Salo as well as express train connections to Pieksämäki via Tampere and Jyväskylä . Connections to Naantali and Uusikaupunki , which were closed in 1992 due to insufficient passenger numbers , are historical .
Surname
The original name of the station is Turku Station (Finnish. Turun rautatieasma , Swedish. Åbo järnvägsstation ). On June 7, 2010, however, the name was officially changed to Turku Central Station (Finnish: Turun päärautatieasema , Swedish Åbo centralstation ) - analogous to Helsinki station - in order to set the station more apart from the other stations in the city. On the Finnish Railways , the station is abbreviated as Turku C in addition to Tku .
