Warnemünde railway station bridge
The station bridge in the Baltic Sea resort of Warnemünde connects the Warnemünder station on the central mole and the western town center across the Alte Strom .
Built in 1903 as a swing bridge over the only sea canal to Rostock's city harbor until the beginning of the 20th century , it functions purely as a pedestrian bridge and in the summer season more than 20,000 pedestrians and cyclists cross this structure every day, making it one of the most important connecting routes in the northernmost part of the city from Rostock makes.
history
The station bridge is one of Warnemünde's landmarks and a technical monument from the early years of the 20th century. At that time, the waterways in Warnemünde were extensively rebuilt and the Neue Strom as a sea canal replaced the connection across the water to Rostock, which also made it possible for wider ships to enter. The central mole was greatly expanded as a ferry station to Denmark and, financed by the city of Rostock, the station bridge over the Alter Strom was built to connect the station with the town. Constructed as a swing bridge, even larger ships could pass the structure when it was open.
chronology
- Completion and commissioning in 1903
- Rotation for passing ship traffic possible until 1940, after that rotation is no longer possible due to bearing damage
- 1991 complete reconstruction of all bridge parts - rotating mechanism is functional again
- On August 7, 2000, a passenger ship with a technical defect rams the bridge and, in the event of an accident, destroys the kingpin, the "heart" of the swing bridge construction
- In 2004/2005 the damage was repaired and a new, cast-iron kingpin was installed
- 2010 Renewal of the planking of the side walkways
- 2011 extensive renovation (corrosion protection work, renewal of all oak planks of the central carriageway) - costs approx. 260,000 euros
Nowadays the turning of the bridge is no longer used for shipping. Only on certain occasions, such as the annual “Warnemünder Stromerwachen”, is it put into operation as a small spectacle under the eyes of the Warnemünde residents and guests.
The bridge with street musicians and small artists is a tourist landmark and popular photo opportunity as well as a love bridge.
